Why Stende's railway history shapes the town centre

Stende grew rapidly after its railway station opened in 1904 on the Riga–Ventspils line, and during the First World War a narrow-gauge field railway was also built here running to the port of Roja - this historic railway connection means older underground infrastructure can be found in the oldest part of town.

The settlement developed on the land of the historic Stende manor estate - which means that near the former manor grounds we carry out digging work with greater caution than in the newer districts.

Beyond the older centre, in the surrounding villages of Talsi municipality, conditions are simpler - standard inland North Kurzeme soil with no particular historic constraints.

Stende is dominated by detached houses and low-rise buildings, with a scattering of small apartment blocks and utility areas - the town's linear layout and growth were historically shaped by the railway and road corridors, and the surrounding countryside is sparsely settled farmland and forest.

The railway and main roads divide access between different parts of town, and in the low-density development, larger plots with individual utility solutions are more common. Seasonality is low - the local market has no strong seasonal swings, and forests, rural roads and longer travel distances are typical just outside town.
